Ovoce a Zelenina
This means Fruits and Vegetables, and is usually the sign on a fruit stand in Prague, and 98% of the time it is Asian people who run the place.

On this page, I will try to bring the work of the garden to the web.

Our true first harvest of anything was from some field greens that Michaela ate back in late April.  They were planted with seed a few months before.  Then, the next thing was a carrot that you can see in the picture here.  It is rather small, but that is because I picked it quite early.  The reason it was picked early is because by mistake I pulled the green leaves off the root today(May 16th), and I then had a good reason to pick the first carrot of the season.  It tasted great, both Michaela and were able to have a bite a few moments ago.

Scroll on down this page, and you will get to the official Maiden Harvest, May 29th, 2009 was the date.

So here it begins, to the right are the 15-20ish super small but perfect looking carrots.  The actual carrot types are Minicore, and Red Core Chantenay.  Its is your guess as to which ones are which.  And the nice two red beets are Chioggia Beets.  The beets say it will be 55 days until they are ready, of course we had  them in for about 120 days.

Just to the left are the potatoes that came up.  Actually they came in underneath the surface, and by my estimation we probably have about 40 potatoes weighing in at a grand 1 1/2 pounds.  They are small ones, but we are hoping they taste great.

As a side note, the Russert potatoes that we planted did not produce anything.  They were ones from the store, so we will take note of that for next planting season.

To the left is a full on action shot of me doing a carrot up-rooting.  This is quite a bit of fun, so easy to do, literally an idiot could harvest carrots.

And here you have it again, the full spread sitting outside on the outdoor table for everyone to see.  After this photo, I took all the zelinas inside and washed them off for better picture taking.  But rest assured, the picture to the left was taken within minutes of the stuff coming out of their holes.

To the right is the beginning of our most promising cabbage to date.  I call him the Jolly Green Giant.  he has quite a few bullet holes, but you can see the head is starting to form nicely.  Lets see how it turns out.

To the left is one of six tomato plants we are in the middle of raising.  As you can tell, there are already some really nice prospects making their way into the pictures.

Do you see those three tall things, well those are 3 romaine lettuce heads, that should have been harvested a while back, instead, we let them sit and now they have turned into nasty stalks.  I chopped one down and threw it in the compost pile, and will be doing the same to the other two.  Its a darn near shame that we grew them up to be big and strong, but nobody wanted to eat them.  Michaela tried one a while back, and she said it tasted nasty, so she kept to the field greens we have going.
